Style & Beauty Tips

David Clemmer, Wardrobe Consultant

  • Ruching, ruching, ruching. The gathering of fabric is a women's best way to camouflage any area you want to hide while often creating a very sexy silhouette.
  • To change a simple black dress into a glamourous outfit add BLING!: shoes, handbags, jewellery and scarves - and don't be afraid to mix metallics.
  • For a more leaner - and even taller - look, keep all clothing items in the same colour palette. Remember to mix textures for a richer, hipper look.
  • Get a great pair of JEANS! Flared, stretch denim is a definite must-have regardless of size or shape; it hugs the body nicely, and balances out the hips while creating a longer looking leg.
  • High collared shirts add a crisp look to fitted suits and frame the face beautifully.

  • Wear a moisturizer with sunscreen every day on the face and neck. Eighty per cent of premature skin aging is due to harmful UV rays.
  • Wash with a gentle non-soap cleanser twice a day. This helps to remove make-up, daily dirt and pollutants, which can block pores and lead to blemishes and breakouts.
  • Drink a lot of water, at least 6-8 glasses a day, and eat a healthy diet. Hydrating the skin is important in preventing wrinkles. And a well balanced diet rich in minerals and vitamins is important in nourishing the skin.

  • Shampooing properly: in order to remove the toxins and pollutants that your hair absorbs during everyday life, make sure prior to applying shampoo to rinse your hair between 45 seconds and a minute (depending on thickness of hair) - this will help dilute the pollutions and toxins allowing your shampoo to perform properly. After massaging shampoo in, let sit for a bit this will help lift the dirt of the scalp, before applying conditioner make sure to squeeze excess water to minimize diluting the conditioner thus getting more out of your product.
  • Promoting stronger hair: take a rubber-tipped paddle brush massaging your hair slowly, smoothly and rhythmically to encourage blood flow and healthy growth.

  • The colour of you teeth should be at least as white as the white of your eyes. The best time to whiten your teeth is after a professional cleaning.
  • Any old fillings that leak should be removed prior to whitening.
  • Old crowns, fillings or bonding will not whiten with any whitening products. The only way to whiten them is by replacing them.
  • The difference between bonding and veneering is that bonding is made from plastic material and is directly placed onto the tooth, and porcelain veneers are made of porcelain in a laboratory as one unit. Porcelain is not porous and will not stain over time whereas bonding is porous and will need to be replaced on average every 3 to 5 years due to discolouration.
  • Whitening usually works best on teeth that are yellow due to smoking, coffee, tea and red wine. Grey coloured teeth such as tetracycline stains are more difficult to whiten.
  • After whitening avoid smoking, coffee, tea, red wine, colas, soy sauce, blueberries etc. as much as possible. Teeth are more susceptible to picking up stains from these materials for one week after whitening.

  • To choose a shade of lipstick that's sure to be right for you, look at the inside of your bottom lip, and choose a shade that's exactly two shades darker.
  • When choosing foundation makeup, make sure to check your foundation under three different types of light: florescent, incandescent, and especially daylight! If it looks good in all three than your application has been correct.
  • If you like the look of liquid eyeliner but lack the confidence to draw clean lines, try wet-cake eyeliner that you build up one stroke at a time!
  • If your foundation looks chalky or tends to lift off in a short period of time, use a primer makeup base before the foundation as a cushion to extend wear.
  • For lush, soft, long lashes, use a dusting of translucent powder between mascara coats to prevent clumping.
  • Check your lip liner with a variety of expressions: smiles, puckers, pouts. This will guarantee a smooth continuous shape. Set liner with powder for longer wear.
  • Use a less moisturizing concealer for blemishes and a moisturizing one for under eyes.
  • To keep your brushes pliable and soft, clean them by shampooing them and rinsing them with hair conditioner.

  • For just a few pennies or a few dollars more, first class choices will give you a great deal of extra mileage. Your business card and stationery need to be printed on high quality paper. Select a quality rollerball or fountain pen, a leather day-timer and briefcase.
  • Select a first class restaurant when entertaining clients. Decorate your office with quality furniture, award-winning plaques and works of art. Drive a car that is in good repair and clean inside and out. Purchase fewer items of higher quality. Use good manners and always think of yourself as an ambassador. How you treat yourself is how the world will treat you!

The truth is plain and simple: exercise and healthier eating equals more energy, less stress, more mental clarity and flexibility. A well-balanced diet rich with fruits and vegetables and low fat proteins is the most sensible way to go. Blood sugar can be controlled by eating meals with a caloric breakdown of 40% low glycemic load carbohydrate (fruits and vegetables), 30% low fat protein, and 30% dietary fat.

An easy way to use your hand and eye to prepare balanced meals is by using this rule of thumb.

  • Protein intake should be no bigger than the size of your palm, fruits and vegetables should be equal to two handfuls. Fats should be no more than the tip of your thumb.
  • Always eat within one hour of waking and one hour before going to bed.
  • Eat five times per day (3 meals and 2 snacks)
  • Never let more then 5 hours pass without eating a Zone meal - even if you are not hungry.
  • Drink at least eight 8 oz glasses of water per day.
  • Exercise will increase the success you enjoy with the Zone meal program, however, a physician should be consulted before starting any new exercise plan.
