Sondra dragged 56K worth of debt into her relationship with Ashton; he had no idea how big her debt was or that it would take eight and a half years to pay the money back. Sondra's been subsidized by her parents, and that financial dependence is shifting to Ashton. Sondra's challenge is to take control of her finances.

Alison's recommendations:

  • Open a low-fee or no-fee joint bank account for shared daily or monthly expenditures and share responsibility
  • Organize financial documents and expenses
  • Cut expenses and track purchases. (Are you able to account for all the money you spend?)
  • Leave debit card at home
  • Operate under a budget and use income to pay bills and pay off debts
