WORKBOOK INSTRUCTIONS
The secret to money management is knowing where you spend your money. When you have this information, you can plan a budget that works for you.

Carry this booklet with you and record everything you spend every day for a whole month. Show the total amount that you paid, including PST and GST.

Record everything you spend each day, whether you use cash, debit or credit card. Credit card purchases should be logged at the time of purchase, not when the bill is paid.

The easiest method is to start recording at the beginning of the month. On that day, fill in all the fixed expenses that are withdrawn from your account automatically during the month; rent, car payments, utilities, etc., on the day they come out of your account. Then using the categories provided, fill in the incidentals you spend each day. Don't forget to record bill payments whether paid by cheque or on-line.

Finally, note bank fees and credit card interest in your book when the statement arrives. Bank or car loan interest is blended into your payments and doesn't need to be recorded separately. At the end of the month, add up your expenses by category, and then total the categories to get the month's overall expenses. Don't hesitate to combine categories or create your own if it makes keeping the daily log easier. Our categories are simply a guide.

Amazingly, when you use this book you will quickly notice that the simple process of recording what you spend will help you pay attention to where the dollars go and, even better, act as a deterrent to spend when the money isn't there.
