See below for some expert paint tips from our friends at Benjamin Moore
Paint smarter, not harder
Always start by painting the ceiling. That way, if paint drips down the walls, it will be of no consequence. Continue onto the walls, applying a second coat only once the first coat has completely dried. Paint the windows followed by the windowsills. Finish up with the radiator, baseboards, doorframe and finally the door.
Prepare a room for painting
Start by moving all furnishings out of the room, and by moving heavy furniture into the middle and covering with a plastic sheet or drop cloth. Don’t forget to remove electrical outlet covers and cover exposed areas with painter’s tape. Drop cloths are your best friend, so cover the floor with cotton sheets or plastic and fasten with painter’s tape. Before you know it, you’ll be ready to transform your room!
Repair cracks/holes in your wall
Make sure you use a proper utility or putty knife to remove loose material from the crack/hole. Make the hole bigger on the inside in order to provide space for the filler. Before applying spackle or a joint compound, don’t forget to vacuum and wipe down the hole. Using your putty knife, apply spackle/compound in smooth strokes, only reapplying once a layer has dried. Once completely dry, use a fine grit sandpaper to smooth the area. You’re not done! Make sure you prime the repaired area so that the filler doesn’t absorb the paint.
