We caught up with designer and co-host of Love It or List It Vacation Homes, Dan Vickery, to learn a little bit about his Mom just in time for Mother's Day. In addition to a strong business woman and a risk taker, Dan praises his mother, Bev, for developing his love of food, a quality that co-host Elisa Goldhawke picked up on! We even scored a recipe right from the "good ol’ home cookin’ master" herself, read on below!

What’s the most important lesson your mom taught you?

"No Drinking! No Drugs! No Sex!" This was yelled often from the porch when my sister and I were in high school and driving away from the farm. We laughed but it worked. When you grow up in a small town there is no getting away with anything, so my sister and I both stayed out of trouble.

What are you most proud of about your mom?

She is a strong business owner who takes risks. When I was young, my mom and grandma had a very successful quilting business called Oregon Treasures. They wrote 5 books and created patterns for multiple quilts, wall hangings, bags, jackets and more. Their work sold around the world. When larger companies started taking over the quilting industry my mom bought the local restaurant, Willowcreek Store & Café. She had no prior restaurant experience but was always a good cook and businesswoman. She learned quickly and ran it successfully for 20 years.

How did you know you were really in trouble with your mom?

“Daniel Thomas!”

What was your favourite meal cooked by mom? (If you have a recipe to share, we’d love it!)

When we were young, my sister and I loved mom’s “Chi Omega”. It was a hamburger casserole she made in college in her sorority. Not sure who named the dish after her sorority. It involved ground hamburger, cream of mushroom soup from the can, tater tots and cheddar cheese. After she started running her restaurant, I developed many favorites: Biscuits with country gravy, chicken-fried steak paired with mashed potatoes, BBQ ribs and prime rib too. My mom became the good ol’ home cookin’ master.

Every Christmas, she’d make fruitcake as well. I know what you’re thinking, but my mom might make the only fruitcake that actually tastes really good. Try Bev Vickery's Fruitcake recipe for yourself here!
