Candice Olson explains how to make the most impact with the least amount of cash when you update your kitchen.

1. For the most impact with the least amount of money, pick up a couple of cans of paint and repaint your kitchen. It takes a relatively small amount of time and can really freshen up a room.

2. If your cabinetry is in good shape but feels a little dated then simply sand it down and start with a fresh, new coat of paint. Adding a paint effect like striae can also add a little interest and bring your kitchen into the 21st century.

3. If you are totally sick of your cabinetry, then take off the doors and create a bit of a showcase for favourite dishes, unique canisters or groovy glassware.

4. Installing a new countertop is an instant facelift for a tired kitchen. From laminate to granite – you can pick some fantastic colours that make a clean, fresh statement.

5. You can really add impact to a kitchen by changing your backsplash. There are a lot of new tiles out there that can really dress up a room. My new favourite are stainless steel tile. The beauty of these babies is that you can use many for all over glitz or just a few for a hint of sparkle.

6. Installing under cabinet lighting can really change the feel of your kitchen. Not only does it feel a little bit more modern, it can also draw attention to a sparkling backsplash or a new granite countertop.
