What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition in which clogged pores lead to inflammation of the skin known as blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. Acne appears most often on the face, but it may also develop on the chest, back, shoulders and upper arms.

This condition is most common in adolescents, affecting about 90 percent of this group. Males are more likely to have more frequent, and more severe, outbreaks of acne than females. Females are more likely to have flare-ups continue into adulthood. Acne is usually less severe in the summer, when exposure to sunlight helps to dry excess skin oil.
