Wife. Mother. Schoolteacher. And now cancer victim. In the wake of a Stage IV cancer diagnosis, Minneapolis native Cathy Jamison (Laura Linney) initially keeps her illness a secret from her husband Paul and son Adam as she prepares for what her doctor says is an almost certain death. Seizing the moment, Cathy sets out to get the swimming pool she’s always wanted and a red sports car that she will leave Adam for his 18th birthday. Her journey is made both richer and more complicated by an irascible elderly neighbor with a devastating secret of her own, an overweight student she adopts as a special project, a sexy school maintenance man, and an idiosyncratic brother for whom homelessness is a lifestyle choice. And in playing the hand she’s been dealt, Cathy is determined to live whatever life she has left to the fullest as she prepares her family for her inevitable fate.
