Spoil an expectant mom with some of these treats.
1. “Mother-to-be” pregnancy massage
Designed specifically for the expecting mom, a Swedish or relaxation massage typically targets the areas of discomfort that pregnant women experience due to the changes in their body. Before you book, check to make sure the massage table is specially designed to be comfortable for moms-to-be. One to try: The Stillwater Spa in Toronto or Calgary (www.stillwaterspa.com)
2. Chic carryall
Sarah Jessica Parker couldn’t wait to become pregnant so she could buy a Louis Vuitton Murakami bag to use as a diaper bag. OK, it’ll set you back $1,070 but a Silk Asian Brocade diaper bag, which both Julianne Moore and Angelina Jolie own, is only about $150. Or, look for any unique, large shoulder bags. If you can sew, make one and add one or two pockets for baby bottles.
3. Cool, comfy clothes
Stars like Courteney Cox Arquette and Debra Messing look totally trendy wearing everyday clothes while pregnant, now that it’s fashionable to wear sweats. Cox Arquette prefers Juicy Couture, but for a great gift that won’t blow the budget, head to Old Navy (www.oldnavy.com). The chain recently introduced funky maternity wear in all its affordable glory – so expectant moms don’t have to feel bad if they toss the threads once they have their bouncing baby.
4. Yoga video
Yoga is a great way for expectant mothers to relax their minds and stretch their muscles. Even a yoga beginner can use home videos, which offer three or four levels to each move. Try one of Vancouver’s most popular yoga instructors, Eoin Finn’s videos (www.vancouveryoga.com).
5. Basket of goodies
Who doesn’t appreciate a treasure trove of goodies – for both mom and babe? Find a nice wicker or straw basket and fill it with baby wipes, bibs and rattles for the new one, and magazines, gourmet cookies and a soothing eye mask for mom. Once she’s taken out all the gifts, she can reuse the basket to hold baby blankets, extra soothers, toys or parenting magazines.
6. Quilt
You don’t need to be a seamstress to give this thoughtful, yet crafty gift. Purchase a plain, thin blanket or quilt and sew patches on three sides to create little “pockets” on the quilt. Then, let mom fill each pocket with a baby memory or item – such as a baby bootie – once the little one has outgrown it.
7. Toy box
An old-fashioned wooden box or a new, durable plastic container is both practical for all the toys kids get these days, while being an item a child will treasure for years to come as a place to hide secrets and favourite toys.
8. Magazine rack
Keeping the mom’s home décor in mind, purchase a magazine rack and fill it with both parenting and general interest magazines. An assortment of light reading material is ideal for taking to the hospital, those sleepless nights, or sitting in the doctor’s office.
9. Craft book
Research the best craft ideas for moms and kids to do together at the library and online and print or photocopy the instructions onto colourful pages, which you can then slip into plastic sheet covers and hold together in a binder. Separate the types of crafts into categories: crafts to make for kids; preschoolers; under five; and unsupervised crafts. It’s a gift that mom can look forward to using for years to come.
10. Gift certificate
When all else fails, give mom the gift that she can use whenever and wherever she wants. Whether it’s an IOU for an evening out while her girlfriends watch the baby, or a gift certificate to a bookstore, restaurant or a day at the salon, no mom can resist the guiltless pleasure of treating herself without spending a cent.
