Welcome to club mom. As a new member, you’re probably wondering when someone is going to hand you a set of rules and regulations for your newborn. Unfortunately, there aren’t any but we can tell you how to get through this time in your life with a little bit of your sanity intact.

Be as organized as possible
Have everything ready to go when you get home from the hospital. You don’t want to be out buying diapers and assembling a crib with a newborn.

Be easy on yourself
Accept that you’re going to be sleep-deprived and feeling insecure about infant-care.

Accept help
You don’t have to do it all. Involve your partner, your in-laws, your friends. If they offer to cook some meals or give you an hour’s rest, hand over the baby and thank them. The baby will survive and so will you. You don’t have to be superwoman. Well, at least not today.

Don’t worry if the house is a mess
You’ve got better things to do. Besides, it’ll get back to normal…one day.

Take care of yourself
Take a shower, brush your teeth and put on clean clothes every day. It’s so easy to forget about yourself in those first few weeks, but these simple steps can save your sanity.

Surrender
Remember, you can’t control everything. You can read all the baby books you want but you still won’t be prepared for every situation. That’s okay. Enjoy the crazy ride. While that 2am feeding can be grueling, you can also give yourself over to the wonder of the moment and enjoy the new life you hold in your arms.
