Indoor and Outdoor Summer Décor tips from interior designer Evelyn Eshun of W Network's Take This House and Sell It TV show.

Decorating for summer can be fun, casual and fresher than winter decorating. Here are a few tips to ‘summerize’ your indoor and outdoor living spaces.

1. Use fresh florals and herbs indoors
When you plant your flowers outside, take it a step further and plant flowers and herbs in a basket which can be moved around the house. A beautiful collection of fresh herbs with some pansies planted in a basket can be put in the sun during the day and enjoyed as a centerpiece indoors or when you’re having dinner or an outdoor party.

2. Lighten up your fabrics
If you have decorated your basic furniture pieces in a neutral palette, you can create a summer feel by simple removing heavy drapery panels, slip covering pillows and perhaps the upholstered seating in your family room or den .Summer fabric choices are usually less expensive are available at dressmaker fabric stores. Select fabrics such as cotton, organza and linen to create this fresh look. Expose your windows, re-dress your pillows, let the light come in.

3. Undress your floors
We tend to walk barefoot in the summer, why not feel the coolness of the hardwood, ceramic or stone floor beneath your feet. Replace your winter area rugs with simple sisal or cotton needlepoint rugs. Simple solid texture will always brighten, lighten and simplify a space. Keep the colors light so that the summer light will reflect and bring more light inside.

4. Add the Sound of Music
Sounds of summer are among the most memorable details in the holiday experience. Have lively, happy music playing in your home; this will create an instant atmosphere and mood to anyone who visits. Take a radio outside too, why not..

5. The scent of summer
Smells along with sounds are key to triggering emotions. Don’t underestimate the power of a great scent wafting though your home. Perfume companies create summer and winter scents, why not take that concept into your whole environment. Add fragrances which have a citrus and green undertone. Spray your favourite summer perfume on a cotton handkerchief and tuck it into into a discreet place by the front door, in your powder room, by your bedside. Put a few drops of oil essence into your toilet water bowl, your faux silk florals and anything else which will absorb a scent.

6. Declutter
We wear less on our bodies in the summer, your house will feel fresher if you declutter and organize. Remove some furniture and extreanous pieces of furniture. There needs to be an airier, simpler feel to the space in the summer. Use the concept of negative space to create this feel. Remove some art and frames from table tops and walls, less is more in the summer. Undress your house and your house will feel lighter.

7. Be trendy
Why not dedicate one room in your house which you know will always be altered for the holidays or the season. A room which you use often, a family room, a small den, even your kitchen. Go all out with this space with trendy and current décor. Accessories, fabrics and art are available these days in such an abundance at a great price. There is really no reason why a whole room can’t reflect what is going on during the current season. Keep the room paint colours neutral (soft warm taupes, soft cream, linen) . Have fun with it.

8. Eat your way to Summer
Buy a duplicate collection of plates and utensils which are colourful and summery (ofcourse to go with your décor). Use these with fun placemats in the summer..you will feel the essence of summer each time you have a meal.

9. Hydrate
Get yourself a few large urns for your kitchen counter, the ones that come with a spout. Fill it with fresh Osmosis water; add slices of lemons, oranges and grapefruit. It is a beautiful décor statement and will encourage you to drink more fluids in style.
