Neutral usually means without color. Neutral colors such as beige, ivory, taupe, black, gray, and white appear to be without color, and yet in many applications these hues often have undertones of color. Be aware of these underlying tones as you match colors or choose paint. For example, beige might have an undertone of pink or tan or gold. White might be slightly ivory, yellow, bluish, or peachy. Having said that, below are 10 tricks to giving your space the look of "neutral" which encompasses the essence of the definition of "neutral."

1. Neutral paint colours on the walls such as beige with a yellow undertone will give a warm and more traditional feeling in the space.

2. Neutral paint colours with blue as an undertone will give you a cool and more contemporary feeling in the space.

3. Good quality and original art stands out beautifully in a neutral decor.

4. Use green foliage such as tropical leaves, evergreen topiaries in various sizes to bring nature in.

5. Build up your walls with architectural detail by adding crowns, larger casings and baseboards to create a layered look. Paint it all the same colour to create a subtle elegance to the space.

6. Use wood floors which have a herringbone or other pattern to create interest.

7. Match your drapery fabrics to the walls, or a shade darker or lighter to create texture. Fabrics such as silk and linen add a layer of interest to the space.

8. Glass is a great tool to keep the space airy and adds sparkle. Whether it be a glass table, large glass vases, glass chandeliers.

9. Natural materials such as sisal, linen, silk, cotton all have an inherent texture which will add dimension to a neutral decor.

10. When in doubt, less is more. With neutral decor, you can achieve both a traditional and/or a contemporary look which is flexible to modify with a shot of colour through the use of accessories such as pillows, throws, art and florals.
