Full Question
What is the best way to get rid of blemishes? I am in my late 20s and STILL break out. Is there a way to get rid of this permanently?
Answer
Dr. Fred Weksberg: Blemishes (or acne) is very common, even in your twenties. There is no cure for acne. Generally the acne gradually disappears as one gets into the twenties, but can continue even into the forties. The best approach is to see a dermatologist for a consultation. There are different types of acne, which require different types of treatments. In general there are 2 types of blemishes- papules & pustules, and secondly the open and closed comedones (whiteheads and blackheads). More advanced acne blemishes are the nodules and cysts. The comedones or blackheads need a topical medication that unclogs the blocked pores. These medications include benzoyl peroxide, and vitamin A acid containing products. The other inflammed blemishes (papules and pustules) need a topical antibiotic such as clindamycin or erythromycin. The more inflammed nodules and cysts generally require oral antibiotics, and in the advanced cases Accutane. Other helpful procedures for acne include acne surgery(blackhead removal), microdermabrasion, glycolic acid peels, and photodynamic therapy (BLU-U treatment). A dermatologist will suggest a proper treatment program after his assessment.
