Foundation

Q: What is the best type of foundation?
Full Question
In your opinion, what is the best type of foundation?

Answer
First, you’ll want to pick one that’s best for your skin type:  dry, oily, or normal.  We tested each type at three different price points:

  1. Clinique – department store brand – $20
  2. Maybelline – drug store brand – $10
  3. Christian Dior – designer brand – $42

All of our testers, regardless of their skin type, raved about the Clinique foundation for an even cover with a nice matte finish.  Keep the following in mind when selecting a colour:

  • The best foundations are neutral and don’t add colour to the face – if you can see the colour “sitting” on your face, it’s not for you.
  • Yellow-based foundations, rather than pinks and peaches, are more natural looking for most skin colors.
  • You may need to combine two or three shades to get exactly the right tint... and that depends on the season, which can make your skin either a bit lighter or darker.
  • You can test the color by drawing a stripe along your jaw-line.  Try a couple colors at the same time so you can compare them next to each other.
  • Blend each colour and look at it in natural lighting – take a small mirror in your purse and go outside the store if you need to in order to avoid those tricky store lights.
  • Lastly, we suggest waiting 15 minutes before making a final decision since your skin's oils and air exposure can alter the colour.
