After months of being stuffed into boots and socks, it's going to take a bit of work to get your feet sandal-worthy, but Jennifer Dagg of J’Unique Aesthetics has a few helpful hints that will do wonders for your tootsies.
1. To start the season off right, get yourself a pedicure. You need to give your feet a good soak and scrub and by treating yourself to one good pedicure at the start of the season you will have the basics to get you started.
2. Try to soak your feet in luke warm water and then use a foot scrubber or pumice stone to rub off the dead skin. You should do this at least once a week. If you don’t have time to soak you can scrub them in the shower. Dagg reminds us not to rub off to much skin because this will make your feet red and raw and it can also cause your feet to build up more calluses. Try adding salt or Epsom salts to the water for a treat.
3. Trim your toenails and the dead skin around your feet. Don’t cut nails too short or dig into the corners of the skin. Cut the toenails straight across to avoid getting ingrown nails.
4. Towel dry your feet completely when you step out of the shower or pool. Putting wet shoes into socks or sandals is not good. Let them dry off before sliding them into anything. Remember to dry between toes.
5. Moisturize your feet a couple of times a day. This keeps them from getting dry. In the morning and before bed are best. Once a week try rubbing Vaseline on your feet and wearing old socks to bed. This is a great way to get feet as soft.
6. When you step out of the shower and your skin is damp push back your cuticles. Never cut your cuticles; they are necessary for keeping bacteria from entering the skin.
7. When your feet are softened and the nails are in good shape, put on some polish. Apply a good clear base coat, followed by polish and then a top coat. Let them dry a few minutes between coats. If polish peels off it means it is old and if it smudges it means you didn’t let it dry enough between coats. Store nail polish in fridge to preserve consistency. If polish has separated, roll the bottle to mix it -- shaking can cause air bubbles on nails.
8. Some women have a few stray hairs on their toes and feet: do not shave them. Instead, wax them so that the hairs grow in lighter and softer.
9. Whenever you have a chance, kick off your high heel pumps and let your feet breathe. Tight shoes cause calluses and bunions that only get worse over time.
10. To accentuate summertime feet, wear a toe ring or an anklet. You can also get designs airbrushed on to your nails, this can be a bit costly, but it does last.
