The grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence. If you have curly hair, you want straight hair and vice versa…. But guess what girls, you’ve got what you’ve got, so you should learn to love it and work with it.

The How to Look Good Naked Canada team has been working with the top hair stylists at Fiorio Salon in Toronto’s tony Yorkville district and they’ve given us some tips that make will make your tresses look their best whether they’re curly or straight.

Curly Haired Girls

1. Curly haired girls, don’t fight the curl, embrace it. No matter what you try it’s always going to win, so you might as well learn to work with your waves.

2. Do yourself a favour and invest in some products that will keep things under control. There are all kinds of products available at lots of different price points.

Just remember when you’re deciding which one to choose, curly hair tends to be dry so a product with moisture is definitely your friend.

3. Cut your hair according to the season. Keep it longer for the summer and go shorter in the fall. Depending on where you live, in the summertime as humidity increases, curly hair absorbs the moisture and becomes bigger or frizzy and appears shorter. Having your longer hair will help to weigh it down and control some of that not so fabulous frizz.

4. When you do get your curly locks cut, make sure that your stylist gives you some long layers to help avoid the triangle look. It’s important to make sure that your stylist has experience working with curly hair. If they cut in too many layers or cut the curl in the wrong place, you’ll resemble Little Orphan Annie when the weather gets humid.

5. Remember: Less is more. Don’t over style your waves. Once the style is set, that’s it you’re finished!

Girls with Straight Hair

Girls with straight hair have a whole different set of challenges, but by following some simple rules they can make the best of their main.

1. Most importantly get a hair cut that allows for volume and movement. The thickness of your hair will determine whether you should have a little or a lot of layering. A blunt cut is often better than layers if your hair is thin as well as straight. Layering it will only make it look stringy.

2. After you get the right cut with all the right layers, make sure you pick up products that won’t weigh down your hair. Try volumizing shampoos and light weight conditioners followed by a mousse or a spray that adds texture. When you have straight hair, it’s all about the best way to achieve maximum volume.

3. The appropriate styling tools will also help you make the best of your naturally linear locks. Round brushes with a good hair dryer will help put a bit of a bend in your hair as well as pumping up the volume.

4. A curling iron can also be a straight haired girl’s best friend, when trying to achieve maximum volume, but make sure hair is completely dry before applying any hot styling tools. The hot tool on your damp hair will damage the hair by literally boiling it when it comes in contact with the hair shaft.

So there you have it; the basic things you need to know to make the best of what your genetics have given you.
